Second Fitting for the White Queen

Today I conducted the second fitting for the White Queen in the top Fabric. Zoe has once again gracefully stepped in as my model as her measurements are exact to my actress. We have left the sleeves out for the time being as we are going to fit these after, my main worry is the skirt and that there is not enough material in the skirt.

Notes from Fitting:

  • Add room in the arms (follow pins)
  • Fix hemline at 28cm off ground all the way around the skirts circumference
  • Separate bodice and skirt into two separate garments
  • Add more fabric into the back of the skirt
  • Drop waistline to 1cm off hemline (follow pins)
  • Make more roses for surface decoration
  • Take darts in 1cm

Skirts away

My main mission this week is to finish the skirt and try to gather as much material into it as possible. However this has proven more than a task as I need to fit 7meters of material into the skirt and where my actress is quite slim, it means a lot of pleating. I spent three days pleating the tops of the material with 1cm pleats all the way around, pinning and pleating as I went. After this they were all tacked down with a running stitch. Once all the seams were matched up, I found that there still wasn't enough material in the skirt and the crinoline could be seen through the material. As my knife pleats are each matched up, I have been told that it was not the most effective way to gather all the material. Apparently if I overlap the pleats and increase the size of them, more fabric will be retained in the skirt. Mandy, one of our lecturers has said she will demonstrate how to do this after the fitting.

How to make Cheese and Tomato Sandwiches

CHEESE  AND TOMATO SANDWICHES

To begin with, Fourteen stitches of  Fawn Double Knit 100% Acrylic Wool was cast on to 4mm knitting needles.  Twenty Five rows were knitted (using garter stitch) and then cast off.  The ends were sewn in with a wool needle to give a neat appearance.

For the cheese filling 26 stitches of Yellow 100% Acrylic Double Knit Wool were cast on, again with 4mm needles and 2 rows of garter stitch were knitted before casting off.

The three tomato pieces were made by casting on 12 stitches of Red Double Knit 100% Acrylic Wool.   The yarn is then cut leaving a long end. Sew the thread through all the stitches on the knitting needle, pull and gather up tightly then fastened off.  The end was sewn in using a wool needle.

The sandwich is put together by placing glue on two sides of the bread piece and placing the cheese on top, pinning it to hold it in place until the glue has dried.  Remove the pins as soon as the glue has dried.

The tomato pieces are then put in place and pinned until the glue has dried.

Remove the pins that were holding the tomato in place.  Putting glue around the interior of the bread piece, fold over the bread onto the cheese and tomato.  This is held in place by 5 pins until dry.  Remove the pins once dry and this will give a nice triangular sandwich .
