The first day back. The life of a costume student starts again after the holidays, and I must admit I'm rather looking forward to it. It is quite worrying to think this is my last year at AUCB, however I have been placed on an amazing project for my Specialist Practice unit. The Canterbury Tales is the second show of the winter line up and myself, three other costume construction makers and a puppeteer shall be working to create, fit and dress the actors/actresses performing within the show. After looking on the designer's (Lauren Holman) blog, I have found myself particularly drawn to the female costumes with the characters Wife of bath and Maylin. Last year I found myself constantly working on male garments and would really like to build on my portfolio by addressing female garments and the styles they encountered. Laurens designs situates around a Medieval period and the costumes reflect this. Quite a lot of the fabrics were natural, cottons and linens dyed with only the well off affording richer fabrics such as velvet. I have been informed that we shall be working as historically accurate as possible, so this shall really test my research and development skills.
From this project I am hoping to become more confident within the workroom practices as well as build upon my previous knowledge. It has been addressed that I need to be more confident about my work, within myself and adapt to the needs of the garment. Therefore I propose to work on these points within this project in order to progress further within this industry.
